Amblyopia: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatment Options
Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” is a vision development disorder where one eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity, even with prescription glasses or contact lenses. It typically begins during infancy or early childhood and, if untreated, can lead to permanent vision impairment. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to restore proper vision and prevent long-term complications.
Amblyopia usually develops when the brain and one eye are not working together effectively. As a result, the brain favors the stronger eye and suppresses input from the weaker one. Over time, this lack of use weakens the visual ability of the affected eye. Several factors can contribute to this condition, including strabismus (misaligned eyes), significant differences in prescription between the eyes (refractive error), or vision obstruction due to conditions like cataracts.
